Award-winning poet Evie Shockley and bestselling author Meg Wolitzer will read from their work on Wednesday, February 11, at 4:30 p.m. in the Berlind Theatre at McCarter Theatre Center. The event, part of the Althea Ward Clark W’21 Reading Series, is free and open to the public.  Official Site

In the 1920s, Albert Barnes built an important collection of African art and used it to promote a progressive platform of educational and social reform with the notion that these objects would inspire contemporary black artists and writers. Poets Sonia Sanchez, former Laura Carnell Professor of English and Women’s Studies at Temple University and Philadelphia’s first poet laureate, and Ja Jahannes, author of TruthFeasting and editor of Black Gold: An Anthology of Black Poetry, read from their work and discuss their inspiration in African art. Evie Shockley, associate professor of English at Rutgers University, will moderate.

Join us for a celebration of John Berryman, in honor of the poet's centenary, marked by FSG last year with the publication of four volumes of Berryman's work, each with a new introduction:

Fourteen distinguished contemporaries will commemorate the poet's life and work, in three afternoon panels, and each will read a favorite poem in that evening's reading, including April Bernard, Henri Cole,  Cornelius Eady, Rachel Hadas, Saskia Hamilton, Cathy Park Hong, A. Van Jordan, Robin Coste Lewis, Edward Mendelson, Patrick Rosal, Evie Shockley, Daniel Swift, Kevin Young, Rachel Zucker.

"'Nothing to See': Ekphrasis and Black Subjectivity in Saidiya Hartman's Lose Your Mother"

On Friday, June 19, 2015 acclaimed poets Forrest Gander, Robert Hass, Brenda Hillman, J. Michael Martinez, Sharon Olds, and Evie Shockley will read from their poetry in the Setzer Auditorium at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento.

This gathering of the tribe—all staff poets from this year's Community of Writers’ Summer Poetry Workshop in Squaw Valley—will raise money for the Poetry Program’s financial aid and scholarships. Books by the poets will be available for purchase and signing.

The Poetry Program is founded on the belief that when poets gather in a community to write new poems, each poet may well break through old habits and write something stronger and truer than before. Black Poetry after the Black Arts Movement is a fifteen-month program funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities that responds to the resurgence of interest in contemporary poetry, its expanded production and wide circulation. Black Poetry continues the work that was undertaken by Don’t Deny My Voice: Reading and Teaching African American Poetry during 2013-14 by giving more focused attention to a reassessment of African American poetry during the last fifty years, from 1960 to the present.  Official Site
